In 9 months one may have almost finished 12th grade, been pregnant and had a baby, moved house and settled in nicely, buy a puppy and have it slightly trained, start up a new social media business, save up and buy a car, or, alternatively, one may have just moved 7802 miles (12555 kilometers) away from home, started a full time job for the first time, and traveled a decent amount around America. Needless to say what I’ve been doing for the past nine months.
I came from the beautiful Cape Town to work and live in America for one year. I am a nanny for two beautiful little kiddos, and love it every day- seriously I do. I live with the family, and they really have become like family to me. My host mum is really friendly and outgoing, like me, and my host dad is pretty down to earth and awesome, like me too….haha just kidding I’m not nearly as awesome as they are. We live in a great area, I have met many other au pairs, as well as some cool american friends, which has definitely helped me settle in in America.
I have to say that there is so much to say about my time here so far… I think I will some it up month by month, how does that sound?
This was the month I got here. It was very cold, I had a crazy 22 hour flight, but I was so exstatic that I had finally achieved a five year long dream. I instantly got on with my host family, and the other au pairs in the area that I had met were really friendly and helpful. I went into NYC for the first time ever, saw disney on ice, and saw snow for the first time ever.
Here I made many new friends, watched the super bowl-huge American thing to do, threw a Velentines day party for the little girl I look after (Jillian), explored more of NYC, saw Mamma Mia on Broadway, and went to six flags for the first of many times.
SUPERBOWLLLL!!!! I wasn’t really that into it, but because it’s an extremely American thing, I’ll be into it :p. We watched it at a friend’s place, then also in march it was st patricks day where I went to watch the parade at the beach, and in the city with a friend. I went to a school fundraiser that my boss was organising and, totally not in a sneaky way, I won four park hopper passes to Disney world . I got my drivers licence too for NJ which was so cool!!! Sadly though, my grandfather passed away in March and it was a tough learning curve for me, but thankfully I had the friends and family here to support me.
My birthday month!!! yay, I had an awesome birthday, got spoilt rotten by my host family, I went to the mets game with a friend, went to Baltimore with the family for passover, and saw my friend there, went to the zoo for the first time ever! I went to the ringling bro’s circus too which was cool.
This was a crazy month, So much happened!! I went to my first rock concert, bamboozle- checked out some sick bands, I had one of the greatest days on the beach with my two friends on memorial day, and some friends started to go back home as their time here was done. this was tough but I learnt a lot.
Weird month, I broke up with my boyfriend, was on summer vacation pretty much because the kids were at camp all day, and scrapbooked a lot, and bought a guitar. not very eventful :p
Highlight of the month= NIAGRA FALLS!!!! need I say more??? I went with 5 other girls, it was pretty awesome.
Vacation month. towards the end of it I took a trip to Missourri for a friends wedding, then to LA, Nevada/Vegas/Grand Canyon, Denver, and back home. It was amazing and so adventurous I loved it. I also partied a lot in New York which was cool to see some rad clubs and bars, it was fun times. Oh and I did my first au pair course and met awesome new people.
I started Jazz dancing this month, also had a busy month with work because the kids were getting back to school and the schedule was changing, went sight seeing around new york to the memorial preview place and central park, and
Here is where I find myself now, happy as can be, loving the states, my family, studying another course, going pumpkin and apple picking, learning so much more every day, meeting new people, and really figuring out where I want to go in life. Lets see what the next few months bring.
